School Painting Timed Around Your Academic Calendar

A classroom wall sees more abrasion, impact, and attempted artwork than almost any commercial surface. From September through June, students lean against walls, push desks into corners, and apply markers, tape, and stickers to surfaces at every height. The right coating survives all of this and cleans up easily with a damp cloth. The wrong coating looks terrible by November.

We use scrubbable eggshell or satin finishes for classroom walls as standard — something with enough washability to handle routine cleaning but not so high a sheen that every scuff shows in harsh overhead fluorescent light. For hallways, we go to semi-gloss on the bottom third of the wall where impact and contact is heaviest, transitioning to a satin or eggshell above. This dual-sheen approach is practical and provides a subtle visual break in long corridor runs.

Gymnasium floors and gymnasiums in general are a specialty. Gymnasium walls need to be painted with a high-impact, scrubbable product that can withstand ball contact. Gym ceiling painting requires proper fall protection equipment and either boom lifts or baker staging for ceiling heights that are typically 6–9 metres. Gymnasium floors are refinished, not painted — we don't do gym floor refinishing, but we coordinate around the floor contractor's schedule.

Library and administrative areas call for a quieter finish — premium eggshell or a matte washable in colours that support focus and calm. Principals' offices and staff rooms are often the forgotten spaces that haven't been repainted since the school opened. A fresh coat in these areas has an outsized effect on staff morale and the impression made on parents and visitors.

School exteriors in Winnipeg are typically masonry, brick, or precast concrete — materials that require breathable, vapour-permeable coatings rather than film-forming systems. Manitoba's freeze-thaw cycle is particularly hard on masonry buildings because moisture that enters through micro-cracks in the coating will freeze, expand, and cause spalling. The solution is a coating system that allows vapour to escape while preventing liquid water from entering.

We use elastomeric masonry coatings for most school exterior work — products with high elongation that bridge hairline cracks rather than fracturing over them, and with vapour permeance ratings that allow the building envelope to breathe. These systems typically come with 10-year manufacturer's warranties on adhesion and flexibility when applied to prepared substrates.

Exterior school painting also typically includes entrance canopy and soffit painting, window frame and metal fascia painting, and stair and ramp railings. Railing painting on school properties requires a rust-inhibiting primer system — bare steel or galvanized steel railings that are spot-painted without primer will rust through within two Manitoba winters.
